Next season Survivor: New Zealand

Survivor: Tanzania is the third season of Janelle's Survivor Series, which began on April 24, 2013.

The season was the first to feature 18 castaways. A new twist to the Hidden Immunity Idol was introduced, where the contestants could only search for the Hidden Immunity Idol if they won immunity, making the stakes even higher this season.

The tribes for this season were Sukuma, wearing orange colored buffs, and Tumbatu, wearing purple colored buffs. Sukuma is named after the largest ethnic group in Tanzania, whilst Tumbatu is named after "Tumbatu Island", the third-largest island making up Zanzabar, a region of Tanzania. On Day 3, both tribes undergone a "Double Tribal" in which two contestants were voted out in the same night, one from each tribe. On Day 6, the tribes merged and became Matumaini, wearing brown buffs. The tribe name was chosen by Natasha and meant "Hope" in Tanzania's main language, Swahili.

In the end, Mona defeated Snow in a 4-3 vote, however both the jurors and the viewers were disappointed with the final two. At the reunion, Natasha won Fan Favorite with 16.9% of the public vote, as well as the Entertainment Award. Alex, after three consecutive Immunity wins, won Player of the Season.

Episode 1: "Gunhoe N' Such"[]

  • Immunity Challenge: Pass The Torch – Players had to pass a torch to their fellow tribemates, and the first tribe to have passed the torch around the whole tribe and successfully light it on the fire win.

The eighteen castaways arrived on the beach and decided to explore. Natasha was the first of the group to begin strategizing, setting up a plan to sit back and act dumb and hope that her tribe will win the majority of the competitions to keep her positioning secure. To be safe, she decided to set up an alliance of three or four so she wouldn't have to worry about any stray votes in camp. Andrew, on the other hand, planned on having his Sukuma tribemates wrapped around his finger by Day 2. In Tumbatu, a solid alliance between Brian, Natasha and Sterling was constructed. During the Immunity challenge, Sean had angered his tribemates after failing to pass the torch on to another player until he returned a short while later. Consequently, Sukuma were sent to their first Tribal Council. Mona felt safe during tribal, explaining that she has been getting to work on her tribemates in order to make sure she knows where they stand. Although the votes were originally going in different directions before Tribal Council, Mona managed to convince Sukuma that Sean was a deeper threat and wasn't entirely active anyway, and the votes started heading his way. Sean attempted to defend himself saying that he turned up to the challenge nonetheless and apologized, but his words weren't enough to stop the votes going in his direction. In the end, Sean was voted off by a vote of 6-2-1.

Episode 2: "Alligator Boots"[]

  • Immunity Challenge: Pilfering Pirates – The tribes had to steal ten items from a boat without being tackled into the water by their teammates. The first tribe to manage to steal all ten items on their boat first won immunity.

Mona began to regret voting out Sean when she began to feel as if he did make an effort in the challenge. She revealed that if she had known, she would have definitely not have turned everyone against him. Over in Tumbatu, Bubba felt good and that he had greased up the game a little by succeeding in getting Natasha and Sedona on his side. In Sukuma, Mona managed to make a 'final three' deal with Andrew and Chris, explaining that all three of them are strong and could make a good pre-merge alliance. However, she didn't expect the alliance to go any further than merge. That night, Sukuma made an astonishing comeback in the challenge, sending Tumbatu to Tribal Council. Most of the tribemates believed that they were united and successful and this was just a tiny slip-up. Martin was however disappointed in his tribes efforts and felt like they didn't do a great job in the challenge. Sterling mentioned that Tumbatu were a more cohesive unit than Sukuma and that more communication will win them Immunity in the next challenge, and was also intruged to know where everybody's minds are at when the votes come through. The tribe were very much united as they said according to the votes, and Alicia was sent home by a 7-1-1 vote.

Episode 3: "A Shot At Luck"[]

  • Immunity Challenge: Poll Wars – Both tribes were entered into a poll. The contestant with the highest percentage on their tribe won Immunity in the Double Tribal. The tribe with the most votes won a clue to the idol.

After Tribal Council, it was revealed that the two tribes will undergo a double Tribal, where both tribes would head to Tribal Council with one of their own tribemates immune. The Tumbatu alliance consisting of Brian, Natasha and Sterling hatched a plan to vote off Cedric, using his self-vote at the last Tribal Council as the perfect reason to vote him off. During a conversation, Bubba, unaware of Natasha's alliance with Brian, explained to Natasha how he still didn't trust Brian. He then told her that he thought that either Brian or Natasha would be going at the next Tribal, to the annoyance of Natasha. Later, Bubba was confused at Natasha's attitude towards her, believing their alliance-of-two had gone downhill. Meanwhile in Sukuma, Andrew felt like sticking with his alliance with Chris and Mona, believing they would win him the game and that he could easily be the puppet master. After the Immunity challenge, Chris won Immunity for Sukuma whilst Brian won Immunity for Tumbatu. Both tribes headed to Tribal that night, starting with Sukuma. The tribe were already set on voting out Acacia, basing their votes on activeness around the camp. In the end, Acacia was voted off 7-1. At Tumbatu's Tribal Council, the votes weren't so straight forward. However, Cedric still held a good almost-majority vote and was voted off in a huge 4-1-1-1-1 vote.

Episode 4: "Eat Or Be Eaten"[]

  • Immunity Challenge: Boarding Party – Each tribe had to get all their members on the opposite side of the board first. When someone crossed an intersecting square with someone from the other tribe, they dueled, and the loser of the duel was sent back to the start of the column they were in.

Natasha named herself a "Hero In Disguise" as her plan to act as if she wasn't significant was falling into place. Despite not turning up to the challenge and Tumbatu heading to Tribal Council over Sukuma, Natasha remained in a secure position within the tribe and everything was pretty much going her way. Christian felt slightly lost vote-wise and was sure he was voting with the majority in voting Brian, but nobody else was voting with him. Later, Natasha began to think that Bubba was getting paranoid too quickly, and was getting annoyed at his change of plans most of the time, having to always balance out her plans with Brian and Sterling with Bubba's plans. During a conversation in the bushes, Bubba tried to make Natasha flip on to the side with Christian and Sedona and blindside Brian. He also explained that they could plan to split the votes, with the two along with Brian voting for Christian, and Christian and Sedona and anyone else Christian had under his wing voting for Brian - However, Natasha exclaimed that everyone was voting off Christian since he hadn't done anything around camp. She suggested that it wouldn't be hard to lie to Christian and say that they would be voting with him at Tribal Council. Natasha hoped for Bubba to go through with the plan. That night, Natasha unwillingly made a Final 2 deal with Bubba, continuing her act of 'playing dumb'. Bubba then confided in Natasha and voted with her against Christian, however Bubba still felt that being in one alliance with Natasha, Sedona and Brian and another with Christian, Sedona and maybe Natasha was ought to shake things up in camp. In the end, Bubba voted with the alliance of Natasha, Brian and Sterling, putting her allies Christian and Sedona in the minority voting Brian, and Martin voted on his own with Sterling. This meant that by a 4-2-1 vote, Christian was voted out, and Natasha's plan was successful.

Episode 5: "Undo Is Not A Word!"[]

  • Immunity Challenge: QUAD – The tribes were given a letter and they had to be the first to say a proper word (name, place, thing) that began with the posted letter. The first person to answer correctly won a point for their tribe.

The aftermath of Christian's exit was gloomy. Sukuma were by this time in the majority and Tumbatu had to rely on the next Immunity challenge in order to pick themselves up from where they landed. The Immunity challenge was definitely a power struggle, with the two tribes tying up until the last question, where Tumbatu fell flat and Sukuma won their second consecutive challenge, putting Tumbatu in deep danger for merge. Bubba originally wanted Tumbatu to vote out Brian, however, Sterling hatched a plan with Natasha to vote out Sedona at Tribal Council. Brian was down for it and the alliance had to make sure Bubba knew not to vote out Brian, and vote out Sedona instead. Martin remained alone and had no clue to where his tribe was at, and voted for Bubba. Everyone else however unanimously voted out Sedona and she was voted off after another successful vote of 5-1.

Episode 6: "Playing With A Monkey In The Forest"[]

  • Immunity Challenge: None – Survivor Auction. - The players began with 500 Survivor Bucks, and they had to bid on several rewards (some covered, some not covered) and the highest bidder attained the reward.

After Sedona's exit, Sukuma and Tumbatu merged into one. Natasha began making a mental list in her head of strong competitors. She unwittingly decided to target the Sukuma trio alliance, consisting of Andrew, Chris and Mona. However, she also mentioned that if needed she'd attempt to work with one of them in order to gain an extra vote so Tumbatu wouldn't be demolished in the first few merge Tribal Council's. Natasha had to try and stop Bubba from targetting his alliance with Brian and Sterling and try stringing Bubba along with them to gain safety in numbers, then push him aside when he isn't needed. The next morning, DJ began to feel the pressure of the game and decided to leave, meaning just eleven remained. Natasha used this to her advantage and decided to talk to Chris and get him to flip on to their side. She also managed to talk to Will until she was sure they would never vote her out. That night, the newly merged tribe Matumaini, chosen by Natasha, headed to the Survivor Auction. During the Auction, Chris bought the oppurtunity to send someone else away on a night's vacation. For strategical reasons and to make sure his original tribe were in the vast majority within Matumaini, he sent away Natasha meaning she was immune but could not vote in Tribal Council, thus angering her. Meanwhile, Snow found the Hidden Immunity Idol and told Mona, and Mona later explained that she can use this to her own advantage. Mona decided not to play too hard too fast using Sterling, Brian, Andrew and Chris as exampled, and just sit back and work on her tribemates behind the scenes. That evening, words got round to Natasha that Sukuma were planning on pagonging Tumbatu, putting Natasha to work by exchanging words with the strongest of Sukuma - Andrew. She pitched an idea to him that they would be a power duo if they worked together and could easily make the final two. She then hatched a plan behind doors, that if Andrew accepted the offer, they'd need to blindside Chris quick enough so he doesn't use his nullification idols, then knock out dead weight until the remains of Tumbatu can vote out Andrew. However, she also explained that if he didn't accept the offer she'd talk to Chris and tell him that Andrew wants him gone, then blindside Andrew. Natasha continued to search for the idol up until Tribal Council, unaware that Snow had already found it. At Tribal Council, Natasha's pleads didn't work and Sukuma stuck together and voted out Martin. Martin, for the last time, voted on his own by voting Snow, and the rest of Tumbatu voted Andrew, meaning Martin was voted out by a 6-3-1 vote.

Episode 7: "No Mercy"[]

  • Immunity Challenge: Bloody Hands – The contestants were asked basic Survivor trivia questions. The first person to answer correctly had to give some 'Bloody Hands' meaning the sole decision to eliminate someone from the competition.

Day 7 was quieter than most days. The mood in camp was gloomy mainly because of the division between the original tribes, Sukuma and Tumbatu. With Tumbatu on a sinking ship, Brian, Bubba, Natasha and Sterling began scrambling. Natasha sent pleads to Alex, Mona and Snow explaining that if they were to pick off the Tumbatu for the next four Tribal Councils, Andrew and Chris would still be in power and could easily control the votes when surviving was crucial. Despite her pleads, it wasn't enough to change the voting system. The Six Sukumas voted Brian, Bubba and Natasha voted Andrew at random, and Brian, giving up on his original Tumbatu tribe in hopes to be in the majority with Sukuma, voted Sterling. The final vote came to 6-2-2 and Brian was sent packing.

Episode 8: "Flirting With Disaster"[]

  • Immunity Challenge: Scattergories – The contestants were given a letter and a group of questions. The aim of the game was to answer as many questions as they could beginning with the letter given in 3 minutes. They received a point for each valid answer. The contestant with the most points won immunity.

After Tribal Council, an 'all-girls alliance' formed between Natasha, Mona and Snow, this being the first official cross-tribe alliance since the merge began. Mona and Snow liked Natasha's idea of helping them not get screwed in Final Five and joined forces with Natasha, giving the alliance of her, Bubba and Sterling more hope. Natasha also made seperate deals with Andrew and Chris so they wouldn't suggest Sukuma voting her out. Mona on the other hand was somewhat unsure about Natasha, feeling as if she was the type to backstab her in the future. Natasha made a plan to take the pre-existing alliance of herself, Sterling and Bubba and align them with her other alliance with Mona and Snow, meaning that they would have five votes and therefore a majority over everyone else. However, Mona ultimately decided to 'leave' the Sukuma Six and vote with what she dubs as "The Gloop Troop" (the Girls Alliance), but also wondered if it was too soon to flip. Meanwhile, Natasha was feeling good about the new cross-tribe alliance, however she needed to get out Sukuma secretly in order to make sure neither Andrew or Chris use their powers if they catch on that Sukuma is going on. When Chris won Individual Immunity, the main focus was on Andrew. At Tribal Council, Bubba, Natasha, Sterling and Snow all voted for Andrew and Mona stuck with Sukuma. However, Sukuma's votes had somehow split at the last minute. Alex and Andrew voted for Bubba, whilst Chris and Mona voted for Sterling, meaning although Mona flipped back, Tumbatu were finally successful, and Andrew was sent home by a vote of 4-2-2-1, with Will's vote being a self-vote.

Episode 9: "Majority Rules"[]

  • Immunity Challenge: Knock Them Out – The contestants, two at a time, were given Survivor-based words with the letters in an incorrect order. If the first to buzz in answers correctly, they move on and the other is eliminated. The winner of each round chooses the next two to face off and so forth.

When Bubba, Natasha and Sterling realized that someone didn't vote with them, they suspected Snow, even though it was Mona. Natasha explained that Snow was very shifty and quiet. Their next plan was to get rid of Chris in hopes that the alliance will stick, however Chris won Immunity, and when they found out everyone was targetting Sterling, Bubba and Natasha had no choice but to vote with the majority and send out their own ally. Natasha tried to continue to stay on Chris' good side so that he wouldn't suspect that she was being unloyal to him or planning to get him out. Chris decided to use his two Nullification Idols on Bubba and Sterling so he could be sure that Sterling was going to be the one heading home, and he was proved right, as Sterling was sent home by a vote of 5-1.

Episode 10: "I Can Still Outsmart These People?"[]

  • Immunity Challenge: Checkmate – Contestants had to move across a Chess board moving like a knight in an L shape. Each time they moved off a square the square they moved from is removed from the board completely and cannot be used for the remainder of the game. The last one standing won immunity.

Feeling that it was time for Chris to go home, Natasha tried her best to persuade Will to vote him out. He agreed, meaning Chris was set to be leaving. Mona, in the meantime, decided to play a more social game. She wanted to know where everyone was at before she voted in Tribal Council. At the Immunity Challenge, "Checkmate", Alex decided to come out of his shell and play a strategical game, making sure all accessible squares were plotted and the outcome of moving there. His strategy worked, and he won his first Immunity challenge. Meanwhile, Will also decided to come out of his shell, where he tried to get the numbers to blindside Chris and put himself in a position of power in the game. Natasha also plotted to get out Chris, feeling his Immunity wins are threatening. Natasha had different options to where she could go as far as final two's are concerned. She listed Alex, Snow, Bubba, and possibly Mona and Will as competitors she could most likely beat in the final. At Tribal Council, Chris felt fairly safe, but Will and Natasha's planned blindside worked and Chris was sent out by a vote of 5-2, with only Alex voting with him.

Episode 11: "Bigger Intentions"[]

  • Immunity Challenge: The Moving Game – The final six had to participate in a challenge where they had to keep there mouse moving for as long as possible. Whoever managed to move for the longest won immunity.

Mona was angered at how Natasha thought she was controlling the game. The plan for Mona was to get out which ever piece of 'gloop' (Bubba or Natasha) that wasn't protected by Immunity. After Chris' blindside, old alliances returned and it was Sukuma vs Tumbatu all over again, meaning Bubba and Natasha were cornered 4 to 2. Snow planned on using her idol just in case there was a last minute change in the votes. Alex won Immunity for the second consecutive time, and the plan for what was left of the Sukuma Six to unite and vote out Bubba, feeling that he was tougher in challenges than Natasha. In the end, Snow decided to use her idol, voiding Bubba and Natasha's votes and Bubba was sent home by a vote of 4-0.

Episode 12: "No More Tumbatu"[]

  • Immunity Challenge: Slide To Victory – The contestants had to complete a Sliding Puzzle in the fastest time in order to win the Individual Immunity Necklace.

After Bubba was sent home, a new idol was placed, which Alex found later that night. Natasha found the clue and the whereabouts of the idol, but there was no idol there since Alex had already got it before her. Natasha felt as if she was done in the game and the vote would be 4-1 to get her out, after Sukuma suddenly decided to team up again. She decided to make up possible scenarios and outcomes which would be to win Immunity and send Alex home, and have a Final Three of herself, Snow and Will, but when Alex won Immunity for his third time in a row, chances weren't looking so bright for Natasha. However, in one last hope, Natasha decided to lie to Mona, Snow and Will and tell them that she does indeed have the idol, however Mona and Snow didn't believe her. However, Will believed her and decided to vote her out thinking she had the idol, to make it look like he was on Mona's side. However, Will's vote added to the majority and Natasha was sent home by a unanimous vote.

Episode 13: "Blondetourage"[]

  • Immunity Challenge: Stationary – The final four had to complete three challenges and get the most overall correct answers to win the Immunity challenge.
  • Immunity Challenge: Bunny Hop – The person to survive the longest on their pedestals by posting a phrase in a 5-minute or under time limit all throughout the night, won the final immunity competition, and the ultimate decision in who gets third place.

Will decided to try his best in the challenge to stop Alex from winning. She noted that if he did win, Will would need Alex to vote Snow out, since he already knew that Mona would anyway. At the Immunity challenge, Will outplayed Alex in the tiebreaker question and thus won the final four Immunity challenge. The plan was set in stone that Alex was going to be voted out, and by a unanimous vote of 3-1 he became the sixth member of the Jury. The three remaining players, Mona, Snow and Will competed in the final Immunity challenge the next day late at night. Snow was the first to drop off, leaving Mona and Will to battle it out. Mona promised that he'd take Will to the finals if Will dropped, which he did. However, Mona lied and took Snow instead, angering viewers and the Jury at the final two. During Jury Questioning, the jurors criticized both finalists about their gameplay. At first the jury was bitter, however when the shock had calmed down the jurors began to sway towards Mona. In the end, Mona was crowned the Sole Survivor by a close vote of 4-3.

Trivia[]

  • With eighteen castaways in its roster, Survivor: Tanzania was the first season to exceed the usual number of contestants (16).
  • This marks the first time, excluding finale episodes, that there were more than one Tribal Councils in one episode.
    • It's also the first time that a single tribemate won the Immunity Idol (Chris and Brian won Sukuma and Tumbatu's idols respectively).
  • For the first time there was a Survivor Auction.
  • This is the first season to have a merge outside the Top 10 mark.
    • This is the first season to have the tribes merge with 12 players remaining. It would be followed by Survivor: New Zealand.
      • The tribes merged with 12 players remaining because it was originally planned that there would be a nine-person jury and a final three. However following the unexpected exit of DJ just after the two tribes merged, this plan was abandoned.
  • This was the most controversial final two of the series.
  • For the first time, the winner did not receive a Gift Prize as given in the past two seasons.
    • This was also carried out in all later seasons.
  • The season holds the record for most self-votes in a single season, with twelve.

Returning castaways[]

Brian returned for Survivor: New Zealand on May 11, 2013, making it to the finale where he placed 4th, missing out on the final three by one place. Sedona returned later in Survivor: Germany on June 21, 2013 where she placed 15th, four places behind her original placement and the second voted out of the season. Alex and Natasha returned for Survivor: All-Stars, placing 17th and 13th, respectively.
